Tonight we have a male model at Medi’s FMA Studio in Costa Mesa. When this quiet bespectacled man disrobed, we beheld a body builder! You may continue reading this on my new fine arts website here: …continue.

We started with a couple of 2 minutes sketches, then 5 minute ones. Then we dove right into a long 2 hour pose divided into 20 minute sessions.
The life drawing session was free for new comers. The studio in Costa Mesa even provided monster boards, newsprints, charcoals to welcome the new folks. The fee for the 4 hour life drawing session for the rest of us was $10. Medi served the artists bries, cheeses, crackers, hot organic teas and wines. We were well taken care of. Thank you Medi (who said he will actually read the words on my blog) ! Also, thank you to Yoni, who was our artist’s model for the night (here is Yoni’s website) – Jzin
2 minute pose. The fallen Herculean.
2 minute pose. Yoni has a dark beard the looks of Abrahamic patriachs.
Nezahat and I observed that sketching a muscled man is more work than sketching a young girl like Vanna Mae. Yoni is full of muscles, so much to draw, I find myself working hard to get everything in during the short poses.
2 minute pose. Hero scrambling to his feet.
Oh! I lucked out. I really love the long pose. In this pose he looked vulnerable and heart-breaking, despite the strength resting in the bulk of his muscles and that threatening scimitar.
This was what I painted at the end of the 2 hour long pose.
In my haste to finish this painting in color, I did my sketch directly onto my gessoed canvas with Burnt Siena paint. The legs, hands and other parts of this painting including the background could use more working on, away from the studio session.
A story. How I love stories.
This pose reminded me of a tale in the Arabian Night (or perhaps another tome) where a crown prince and his brothers all fell in love with the same beautiful slave girl. It caused much strife and distraction in the palace. In the end, it was decreed that they must get rid of this slave girl for the common good and that the crown prince who loved her deeply must deliver the blow. This pose by Yoni looked like the prince with his heavy heart looming over his true love, moments before he made the outward choice of duty over love.
Yoni has a beautiful face. His straight and regal nose makes his face very easy to paint.
Detail of torso.
Fearing the pose would end suddenly, I painted as fast as I could with big, fast strokes.
Thank you for being a witness to my creative journey! – Jzin
Here is an article about our artist’s model Yoni, in the San Diego Reader. The model’s resume is here.
