This painting depicts a romantic tragedy which has been retold for centuries in poems, novels, paintings and even modern film. Emperor Xuanzong (r. 713-756 AD), now known by his posthumous name Ming Huang, fell in love with the beautiful young Yang Guifei. In 755 A.D., Anlu Shan, a general of Turkic origins, led a revolt and the Emperor and court fled. The royal soldiers blamed Yang Guifei and forced the Emperor to execute her. Although in the blue and green style of the T’ang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.), it is believed to have been painted in the 15th century.
