August 18, 2014. Monday morning. I have been wanting to add elements of nature to my playscapes. Hitherto, I have not found many good felting techniques for trees. Trees need to be sturdy so they do not topple over.
This morning in my kitchen, I have just discovered one way to make a sturdy gnarled tree! I am pleased that this method yields a small and sturdy tree with much versatility for variations. You can change the foliage to make a tree of any season, or for winter, no leaves. This tree also has posable branches, sturdy enough to hold a bird’s nest or a small doll on the branches.
This tree will be wonderful for your felted playscapes, nature table, table top puppet show, seasonal display and open ended doll play.

“If you keep a green bough in your heart, the singing bird will come.” (Chinese proverb).
This tree is sturdy enough for a small elf to frolic on.
Purple wisteria blossoms hang from limbs of this tree.

This tutorial yields a basic tree trunk for endless variations. You may choose to hang the leaves or flowers onto the branches, and change the look of your tree according to season (e.g. no leaves in winter, nest of birds in spring). Alternatively, you can permanently sew or needle-felt foliage into the tree trunk for added security if the tree will be much handled by children during play.
Here are some photos of our handmade playscapes. A tree will fit perfectly in.
This was the first playscape made by my children…
