橄欖樹 by Sanmao

Don’t ask from where I have come
My home is far, far away
Why do you wander so far
Wander so far, wander so far
For the little bird flying in the sky
For the blue brook running in the mountain
For the broad meadow green and wide
I wander, wander so far
Then, is there more?
Yes, for the Olive tree of my dream
Don’t ask from where I have come
My home is far, far away
Why do you wander?
Why do you wander so far?
Far, far away
For the Olive tree of my dream
Don’t ask from where I have come
My home is far, far away
Why do you wander so far
Wander so far, wander so far

Olive Tree in Chinese version is such a beautiful song, it’s impressive & unforgettable, mainly it is the excellent combination of the song writer & the singer. With this sense, I wish the English version could have polished a little better. From the translation and to the way which was interpreted by Yip, I felt it was not executed properly.
I wondered why Chiyu did not sing the English version. The soul of the song has been taken out so that the song is not as good anymore. Find a singer with the profound voice as Chiyu, people described her voice as “the sound came from the sky”, indeed. Yip is a good singer, but Olive Tree is not her type. She seemed to have some short nose note to sing, her voice could not open up to touch the sky.
Hope some day the song will be re-do in English version, of course in better way. There are so many talented Chinese musicians lives overseas.
