Fairy Tale Dolls Handmade Lovingly by Our Community for the “Dream Castle Kiki” Raffle Package.
The tallest character (e.g. knight) is a little over 5 inches tall, so he can fit into the corridors, stables and rooms. Other characters are smaller still. E.g. princess, peasants. Most of them are dressed in fabric outfits of Medieval (12th -14th century) European fashions. Some crowns and swords were made with sturdy craft cardboards. – Jzin
The Moorish Prince brandishing his sword in front of the castle moat. But he cannot get inside the castle unless you lower the movable drawbridge.
Is he a foe or friend? You decide.
King Arthur, his best friend Sir Lancelot du Lac and his queen Guinevere sauntering through a meadow in merrier times.
The Unicorn with the golden mane, handmade by Jzin on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Here is the unicorn being made one Sunday morning as I was waiting in the car while my son Vi was playing happily by the lake in Mason Park, Irvine.
As you can see, he is made with much love from quality natural materials, as a thank you to all those who support our school. The golden mane is very luxurious and heavenly soft. It is made from a baby goat’s first shearing and hand dyed for your playing pleasure. You can buy raffle tickets on this link up till March 15, 2014: Go buy raffle tickets on Bidpal link – Jzin
Damsel and the unicorn. The maiden was supposed to be taming the unicorn, but like some children are, she was a little fearful at first meeting.
Carried away!
The sorceress – she is no witch, she is learned in astronomy, botany, biology, alchemy, science, psychology and the occult arts. Needle-felted by Jzin
Fairy with A Magic Wand! Handmade by Anicka and Jzin.
“Little duck, little duck, dost thou see,
Hansel and Gretel are waiting for thee.
There’s never a plank, or bridge in sight,
take us across on thy back so white.”
– Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm.
The beat of the swift hoof drew near. The door of the hall was flung wide. In burst the two wild brothers, each with a strong hand on an arm of Princess Esa. She came in grave and brave. – The Beggar Prince and the Two Wild Brothers. The King and The Green Angelica.

The garrulous couple.
After so many years of being together, Bertrand still prefers to hold on to Beatrice’s hand when they walk together.
Betrand takes his Beatrice away from the hustle and bustle of daily castle life from time to time to do breathing meditation together.
These two can also be the Thénardiers, if you are making a Les Misérables play…

Fairy Tales Books to Feed the Soul
Also included in the raffle package are two beloved fairy tale books. One is a treasury to read aloud to the younger child. The other, is a Waldorf reader for the child to read by himself.
The Random House Children’s Treasury: Fairy Tales, Nursery Rhymes and Nonsense Verse
This out-of-print beautifully color illustrated Children’s Treasury is full of fairy tales, nursery rhymes and children’s verse that will entertain the entire family. Many favorites are presented, including Cinderella, The Owl and the Pussycat, Rumpelstiltzkin, Aesop’s Fables, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and Thumbelina. A classic volume, The Random House Children’s Treasury is a bounty of imagination, whimsy and magic to cherish for generations. Hon. Eleanor Vere Boyle’s 1872 “Thumbkinetta” illustration of Hans Christian Andersen’s Thumbelina appears in The Random House Children’s Treasury: Fairy Tales, Nursery Rhymes and Nonsense Verse. This is one of my personal favorite books. These epic tales of Norse heroes in this collection of stories will feed your souls. Many of the tales were compiled by Saxo Grammaticus and other Scandinavian writers, and they perfectly complement the more well-known stories of Norse Gods. The illustrations are based on Old Norse motifs, drawings and carvings, and bring the atmosphere of the stories and poems dramatically to life. The stories are suitable for children aged from about seven to twelve.
“The King and The Green Angelica” by Isabel Wyatt donated by Nona McConville. You can purchase a copy The King and The Green Angelica from The Company of Angels school store.

Night Crafting Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Our team of crafters, consisting of parents and children gathered on Friday 2/7/14, Saturday and Sunday nights in Ms Brooke’s 3rd Grade classroom to work diligently on this project. Thank you everyone for your love and creativity!
3rd Grader Elena deep in thoughts, making creative decisions.

Second Grader Sara donated a pair of kissing bunnies! Look for them in the playscapes!
8 year old homeschooler Anicka made and donated many characters this weekend, including this fairy godmother.
She also made this goose girl from a kit I prepared.
Third Grader Elena needle-felted the Princess (shown here sleeping on her faux fur rug). The 100% silk chiffon dress was hand stitched by Alena.
Behold! The terrifying (or not so terrifying) blue fish who guards the moat of the castle from unwanted marauders. Designed and wet-felted by third grader Elena.
Cathrine made a swan, 9 year old Elena made a baby cygnet to ride on her back. The playscape and bunny were made by Gloria.
6th Grader Hannah donated her needle-felted medieval towns-woman with a long braid. It’s amazing how she conceptualize the doll and created it all in one evening!
Yvonne needle-felted Merlin the wizard in one single evening. His magical staff is made of sycamore twig from Costa Mesa!
I wet-felted the basic lily pond playscape mat at home, using Peace Fleece batting which has rich colors and are very easy to felt. Then, Gloria took over, built and embellished it. Scroll down below to see the playscape.
I made the White Knight. Sometimes I call him Sir Lancelot or Gahmuret. His sword is made of craft cardboard.
Elise did not want to leave her brothers, but the King lifted her onto his horse and rode away towards the palace. – The Wild Swans, Hans Christian Anderson.
This story is included in the The Random House Children’s Treasury. Fairy Tales, Nursery Rhymes and Nonsense Verse which is included in this raffle prize.

On Friday night, Alena left her friends and their wine soiree behind to come craft for our school fundraiser. Thank you Alena! You are too awesome for words!
I am so grateful for the patience and beautiful needle-work of Alena. She sew the black steed of Saladin’s knight, and the white steed of Lionheart’s faithful.
I designed these horses because I love the drama of dichotomies. I did not have any white or black felt and had to handmade felt sheets for the first time.

Riding the dragon.
Yuko lovingly and meticulously crafted this beautiful queen with braided hair made of pure tussah silk fibers.
The queen’s hair is made from the best thing that comes out from a silkworm’s butt! Tussah silk fibers are so soft and silky, your child will be playing with nature’s treasure!
The queen’s dress is made of 100% silk from Thailand.

The Dragon and Its Lair
Cassiopeia, Queen of the Ethiopians, was so proud of her beauty that she dared to compare herself to the Sea-Nymphs. The indignant Sea-Nymphs sent a sea-monster to ravage the coast. Her husand, King Cepheus was told by the oracle to sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to the monster. Perseus beheld Andromeda chained to a rock, waiting for the serpent to seal her fate. Had it not been for her tears and her hair that moved with the breeze, he would have taken her for a marble statue…
He asked her, “O virgin, undeserving of those chains, but rather of such as bind fond lovers together, tell me, I beseech you, your name, and the name of your country, and why you are thus bound.” Andromeda, silent from modesty, did not answer at once, but Perseus persisted…
At last, she revealed her name and that of her country, and told the tale of her mother’s pride. While she was talking, the sea-monster appeared, his head reared above the waters, breaking the waves with his breast. Andromeda cried out. Then Perseus spoke, “There will be time enough for tears; this hour is all we have for rescue. “

Gloria’s Lily Pond playscape in progress. Tuesday, February 11, 2014
February 11, 2014. Over the weekend, Gloria took the lily pond playscape home to work on. This is what she had so far by Tuesday morning.
Ideal as a Spring Season Nature table display, this felted wool playscape is also suited for table top puppet shows…
“Oh! I will promise you all” said she, “if you will only get me my ball.” But she thought to herself, “what is the silly frog chattering about? Let him remain in the water with his equals; he cannot mix in society.” – The Frog Prince by the Brothers Grimm. … The duck came to them, and Hansel seated himself on its back, and told his sister to sit by him. ‘No,’ replied Gretel, ‘that will be too heavy for the little duck; she shall take us across, one after the other.’ The good little duck did so, and when they were once safely across and had walked for a short time, the forest seemed to be more and more familiar to them, and at length they saw from afar their father’s house. Then they began to run, rushed into the parlour, and threw themselves round their father’s neck. – Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm.

The Moat
There is a big fish lurking in the moat, preventing unauthorized persons from entering the castle. A drawbridge is the safest way for those without wings, to enter the castle.
Photos pending.
I love Peace Fleece wool batting for making felted playscapes. They are “stickier” than wool top/roving, so it’s extremely easy to wet-felt with. They come in rich colors with flecks of color variegations, very earthy look that I love.
Shaba green makes a very luxuriant fertile green grassland that makes me happy whenever I see it. Peace Fleece wool battings are also incredible easy to needle-felt with. You can get a Peace Fleece needle-felting starter kit from our school fundraiser here: https://cloud.bidpal.net/Portal10/bpe68199/catalog/item.html?id=92&categoryId=19

Peter and Marty from Peace Fleece.
Peace Fleece is not your typical yarn company. The Peace Fleece offices are in a barn on a sheep and horse farm in the small, rural town of Porter in the foothills of southwestern Maine. Peter Hagerty and his wife Marty Tracy started buying wool from the Soviet Union back in 1985 in hopes that through trade they could help diffuse the threat of nuclear war. Since then Peter has journeyed through Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East in search of farmers and shepherds who are willing to set aside historic enmities in exchange for opportunities leading to mutual understanding and economic interdependence. How cool is that?
