130910 Yvonne and Valentina painting butterflies on silk.

September 10, 2013 Tuesday Morning.

After a long break for summer, our craft group gathered together again to create. We met under the gazebo in the garden of The Company of Angels school store at the Waldorf School of Orange County, Costa Mesa, California, USA. Christine Newell taught us how to make silk paintings.

Here are photos of our creative morning together. I hope you enjoy them! – Jzin.

Today Christine Newell showed us how to make silk paintings. She prepared the supplies below for our project: Pre-stretched silks on frames (we had choices of round or square frames), silk paints, Setasilk Water Based Gutta resist in white, silver, black, gold or clear, pencils, picture templates, paper towels, cups and brushes, Epsom salt and table salt, etc.

If you would like to do this at home, you can purchase supplies online, such here. I just typed in “silk painting, hoop”, “silk painting hoop frames”, “silk painting supplies” on Amazon.com.

Denise chose black resist to draw her butterfly on a square pre-stretched silk.

After drying her black resist with a hair dryer, Denise proceeded to paint her rainbow colored swallow tail butterfly on silk.

Christine used silver colored resist to draw her design. After drying the resist with a hair dryer, she proceeded to add paint to to her picture. Here she made variegated red-pink rose petals. The paint just flowed towards the confines of the dried resist!

Creative silence…

After a long mommying summer of very little crafting for myself, I felt a little craft deprived. I dove right in, drawing a landscape using clear Gutta resist right out of the tube…

The silk frame is propped up on the table with pencils to avoid contact with the table surface.

During the drawing process, I lifted my frame off the table to look at it, then placed it back onto my paper towel which had some resist on it. As a result, I smeared some resist onto my design, visible mostly in the center of the drawing above.

I added some Epsom (in pink cup) and table salts (that white stuff in plastic bag) to the sky area for my landscape, then I sprayed down the picture with the water bottle. This was to give the salted area a mottled effect.

My first silk painting, drying in the sunshine.

Since this is my first attempt at the medium, I made a mistake in forgetting to dry my resist (the clear outlines in the picture above) with a hair dryer before I proceed to the painting step. Comparing my project with Christine’s (she did blow-dry her resist first before adding paint to her drawing) her lines are cleaner and more crisp. My paint would run into the resist lines, instead of being confined into the outlines, giving a messier effect.

Furthermore, I cut a new tube of Gutta resist too low, thus yielding a bigger opening for my tube of resist. As you can see, my resulting drawing outlines are much “fatter” than those of others.

Christine taught a children’s craft camp this summer (2013). Among the many crafts they made, they also did silk painting. Here is a gorgeous photo of the children’s work this summer. Photo below courtesy of Sharon Pittenger.
