Costumes and Instructions for Our “Hexinnian 賀新年 Greeters”

Due to lack of 10 of the same costumes, we have 2 styles of costumes for this role, namely…

  1. “The Cartwheeler Hexinnian Greeter”. Red blouse from Taiwan+black leggings+black shoes for 2 cartwheelers and 2 more children on the far right side of the group. I.e., 4 Hexinnian children only will be wearing this style
  2. “The Gown-girl Hexinnian Greeter”. 6 “Hexinnian Greeters” will be wearing red gowns from Chinatown.

What to wear to 1/27/2012 Friday 6pm dress rehearsal at school

  • please wear your costumes
  • long black leggings/tights/pants down to ankle. If you do not have one, please ask around and borrow a pair. If you have an extra pair, please bring in bag as backup.
  • short white ankle socks. They sell them per bag at Target.
  • black shoes. Can be…
          • black mary janes/strap across OK
            black boat shoes OK
            black tap shoes OK
            black ballet flats OK
            black kungfu shoes OK
            (ideally not sneakers if they look very big)
            your black shoes: similar to above, please
          • Cartwheelers: must wear snug fitting black shoes so we do not have “flying kungfu shoes performance”
  • Tie hair into 2 side buns. Click here to see how to make 2 side buns. Please come to 1/27 Friday 6pm dress rehearsal AND 1/28 Saturday 12:30pm dress rehearsal with hair done this way, so the volunteers can help install flowers for you upon arrival. Please ask another parent for help, if you need it.

What to wear to 1/28/2012 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • Open front top for easy removal after hair and makeup
  • Come to Barclay wearing comfy open front top and black pants. After arrival at Barclay, make-up may be touched up or applied and large red/gold flowers will be attached to sidebuns. The open front top is easy to remove without messing up hair and makeup. Your child will change into her red costume after hair and makeup is done. During breaks, your child will dress back into the open front top and a pair of comfy pants.
  • same black shoes and white ankle socks

What to bring to 1/28/2012 Saturday 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • Your costume (either red long gown from Chinatown or red blouse from Taiwan) Please label your bag and important things
  • your comb, hair rubber-bands, hair pins in a small ziploc bag
  • comfortable clothes (comfy pants and open front top) to change into after 12:30pm dress rehearsal. Children will be wearing their comfy clothes while waiting until 5:30pm costume time.
  • Optional: extra pairs of white ankle socks
  • Optional: If you have extra pair of black leggins, please bring as back up.
  • comfy pair of shoes if shoes for performance are new or uncomfortable

Hexinnian Costumes Volunteer please bring:

  • extra hair pins, rubber bands to pin up red flowers, comb
  • big bag of red flowers
  • Thanks Sally: bring flower garlands, lanterns, bianpaos, lion head

The final Stage-Ready look for “Hexinnian Greeters”:

  • Red and gold Fengxianzhuang or Taiwan top costumes
  • long black leggings down to ankle
  • white ankle socks

  • The girls’ hair will be in 2 side buns with a large red and gold flower in each side bun

Costumes and Instructions for Our “Fan Dancers”

We have 7 girls for this role.

We will be securing large pink peony flowers to the hair instead of white fluffy maribou boa snippets.

What to wear to 1/27/2012 Friday 6pm dress rehearsal:

  • Wear your qipao
  • Hair in 2 braids. One braid on each side. If you need help, please ask another parent to help.
  • white ankle socks
  • pastel colors glitter/sparkly shoes: pink, gold, cream, white, something similar to those
  • Optional: white/light pink tights. If ALL 7 girls have white tights we will wear them. Otherwise, we will not wear the white tights. If you happen to have some extra tights, please bring to loan/sell to another mom who may not have it. Otherwise, we will stay with original plan: white ankle socks and glitter shoes.
  • bring clothes to change into after our dress rehearsal. In case we will be eating, we want to keep the costumes clean.

What to wear to  1/28/2012 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • Hair in 2 braids. One braid on each side. If you need help, please ask another parent to help.
  • Come to Barclay wearing comfy open front top and comfy pants. After arrival at Barclay, make-up may be touched up and large pink flowers will be attached to braids. The open front top is easy to remove without messing up hair and makeup. Your child will change into her button-front qipao after hair and makeup is done. During breaks, your child will dress back into the open front top and pants.

What to bring to 1/28/2012 Saturday 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • Your costume, snacks and makeup bag
  • Your qipao: pink or golden
  • your comb, hair rubber-bands, hair pins in a small ziploc bag
  • comfortable clothes to change into after 12:30pm dress rehearsal. Your child will be wearing these comfortable clothes while waiting until 5:30pm costume time for 7pm curtain call.
  • Optional: extra pairs of white ankle socks
  • Optional: comfy pair of shoes if shoes for performance is new or uncomfortable

Fan Dancer Volunteer please bring:

  • extra hair pins to pin up pink flowers, comb
  • extra bag of hair rubber bands to tie up braids
  • extra anything else for any accidental spills or costume malfunctions
  • needle and thread, scissors
  • big bag of pink flowers, feather fans

The final “Fan Dancer” look for the Stage: Feminine, delicate, like a dream. The color scheme for fan dancers are white, gold, pink. Pastel tones, silky brocade, fluffy fans, large pink flowers in their braids. The children will look gorgeously dreamy!

  • Similar to the photos below (please check back later for photos showing finished hair and make-up)
  • The girls will be in 2 braids with large pink flowers (unlike photos below) in their hair.
  • Qipao in pink or golden
  • Shoes in pastel colors which are glittery. E.g. golden, silver, pink, white or similar pale colored glitter shoes. I have pink, gold and silver ones to loan you if you have small feet.

Costumes and Instructions for Our strong boys 男子漢 Nanzihan!

What to wear to 1/27/2012 Friday 6pm dress rehearsal and 1/28/2012 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • Please come to these events dressed in your blue top and pants
  • plus socks and ideally black (or dark shoes)
  • those of you with short sleeved costumes, can you please wear blue long sleeves (or very similar color) so your sleeves look long?
  • Please bring comfortable T-shirts and pants to change into after 12:30pm rehearsal. So the boys can dress in those comfortable tops and pants until 5:30pm when they get back into their costumes for 7pm curtain call.

The look for our Strong Boys 男子漢 Nanzihan.

What to wear to 1/27/2012 Friday 6pm dress rehearsal and 1/28/2012 12:30pm Barclay Theatre Dress Rehearsal:

  • white socks, black shoes (or dark shoes)
  • Lion dancer: blue top and pants
  • Firecracker bearer: red and yellow kungfu outfit and kungfu shoes if you have, otherwise dark shoes.
