Week 1. Yippee-ki-yay, A Cowboy Tale

WEEK 1 – WORKSHOP INFORMATION

  • Instructors: Jzin Teng and Elena Roussanova of Castle of Costa Mesa
  • Dates: Monday – Friday, June 23 – 27, 2025 (5 days)
  • Time: 9am to 1pm 
  • Puppet-Show Performance: 12:30pm (tentatively) Friday, June 27, 2025. All are invited to enjoy the student’s show!
  • Classroom: (tentatively) 7th Grade Classroom – with Air Condition and Piano
  • Address: The Waldorf School of Orange County, 2350 Canyon Drive. Costa Mesa, CA 92627
  • Ages: Rising 5 – 12 Graders. No experience necessary. Students ages 9 and older with steady and focused temperament, who are able to work safely with felting needles, can make special requests to instructor Jzin (949) 400-7082 to register for the class.

WEEK 1 – WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Students will be designing and creating characters and scenes for this Table Top Puppet Show. You will design and needle-felt characters such as cowboys, ladies, bandits, creatures and more. You will build houses, dollhouse furniture and more. Bring your creative brain, you will design, craft, act, sing, play musical instruments, and perform puppet show to entertain an audience on our open house on Friday June 27, 2025. Note: We will be using sharp, barbed needles for needle-felting and hot glue guns for set construction.

WEEK 2 – WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Long ago, in the Land of Llewdor, a young man named Gwydion was imprisoned by the wicked wizard Manannan. Gwydion was forced to serve the wizard and do household chores including tending the chickens. How this young man longs to escape and see the world! One day, Gwydion secretly left the tower to seek the truth of who he really was! Students will be creating characters and scenes for this exciting Puppet Show. You will needle-felt characters such as Gwydion, the chicken boy, the wicked wizard Manannan who imprisons him, The Three Bears, Medusa, Princess Rosella and others. We will also create sets for the magical Land of Llewdor. If time permits, we may also craft baby dragons. Bring your creative brain, you will design, craft, act, sing, play musical instruments, design sound effects, tell jokes and perform puppet show to entertain an audience on our open house on Friday, July 14, 2024. So bring your family and friend and neighbors for the puppet show! We will be using sharp, barbed needles for needle-felting.

WEEK 3 – WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Do you know why it rains softly on the seventh day in the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar each year? These are tears of joy created when the cowherd gets to meet his beloved weaver girl, for once a year. Do you like to hear the rest of the story? Come join our felting workshop! Students will be creating characters and scenes for this touching and breathtaking traditional Chinese Folk Tale Puppet Show. We will needle-felt characters such as The Cowherd and The Weaver Girl, the loyal old cow, heavenly soldiers, fairies, farm animals and more. We shall create sets for scenes such as the Heavenly Palace of Xiwangmu, a modest farm and the jade lotus lake. Bring all the creative cells in your being – you will design, craft, act, sing, play musical instruments, design sound effects, and perform puppet show to entertain an audience on our open house on Friday July 21, 2024. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to enjoy this spectacular handmade puppet show of the summer! Note: We will be using sharp, barbed needles for needle-felting and hot glue guns for set construction.
